Mid-Century Ranch - Orinda Interior Designer

Mad Men Mod

Mid-Century Ranch

Niche Interiors was tasked with reviving this classic 1950’s mid-century modern ranch home in the San Francisco Bay Area which had fallen victim to poor remodeling choices throughout the years. Niche’s goal was to create a modern take on a California ranch home, infusing the space with our client’s ‘Mad Men’ aesthetic. New wood flooring and a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s White Dove instantly updated the space. A dated traditional fireplace mantel that was added in the 1980’s was swiftly removed and replaced with a modern treatment with floor to ceiling slate tiles. We added floating walnut shelves to the right of the fireplace, along with custom walnut storage benches on either side. An oversized contemporary painting by local artist Bernadette Jiyong Frank balances the shelves to the left of the fireplace. A graphic Stark rug brings pattern and movement to the space, tying together the two seating areas. Swanky swivel chairs hang out in front of the fireplace, providing a perfect spot for an evening cocktail. The mid-century inspired sectional sofa features a walnut plinth base and navy velvet upholstery. Brass and steel coffee tables and a brass floor lamp add luxe elements.

The design of the library includes a dose of drama with deep black built-ins and trim, vibrant armchairs and a round rug that grounds the seating area. A walnut table is paired with sculptural Holly Hunt chairs and benches for casual dining off of the media room, which features a loungey sectional and Barbara Vaughn photograph. Cube coffee tables were selected with removable beds for the resident cats to nest in. In the primary bedroom our interior designers created a custom walnut and upholstered panel headboard to serve as the focal point, with modern nightstands that reinforce the mid-century design aesthetic. We carried the blue tones from the primary bedroom into the bathroom with penny round flooring, and a custom walnut floating vanity with masculine black plumbing fixtures. The Niche Interiors design team transformed a spare bedroom into a perfume sampling and storage room for our client’s extensive collection. This special project was featured in Elle Decor – read the entire story here.

Considering all the great work Jennifer and her small team did, and how smoothly they did it, it seemed like I’d hired a much larger company. The Niche team is either amazingly efficient or they’ve somehow adapted to surviving on two hours sleep a night.
