Moody, artistic and sexy – this is how our bachelor client described the feel he craved for his historic Victorian home in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. Our interior design team channeled jazz musician vibes with a dash of Art Deco Modern to design a luxe, loungey space perfect for entertaining. Highlighting the original moldings and ceiling medallions was top of mind when coming up with a new color scheme for the home. Oxblood ceilings and charcoal gray moldings add a dramatic twist to the original architectural details from 1900.
A low-slung velvet sofa grounds the living room along with a stately marble and bronze coffee table, modern side tables and a patterned silk rug. A pair of bold mixed media pieces by Tricia Strickfaden add energy and vibrancy to the space. The iconic mid-century ‘Costela’ chair designed by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler in 1950’s Brazil takes center stage upholstered in a vibrant mustard fabric. The rich color palette continues into the adjoining formal dining room which features a custom walnut table designed by Niche Interiors, maroon leather dining chairs and a statement sideboard with faux parchment doors in a golden salmon hue. An oversized steel and smoked glass chandelier by Fuse Lighting fills the space, adding a luxe focal point to the room.
Graphic black and white wallpaper provides a crisp backdrop for the forest green bed in the primary bedroom. The trim and doors are painted in a glossy jet black for maximum impact. The Niche Interiors team designed custom highboy cabinets in the den to maximize vertical storage – one opening to reveal a fully stocked bar and storage for glassware and the other housing a TV. A mid-century modern inspired ceiling fixture and bold artwork lend a retro vibe to the space. Hand painted walls by Caroline Lizarraga add depth to the guest bedroom which has a bespoke bed in a rusty red – a nod to the bold ceilings in the main spaces. Modern glass and brass sconces add mood lighting above marble topped nightstands.
Our interior designers transformed the lower level into an additional entertaining space with speakeasy vibes, featuring a game table, custom dining banquette and dry bar. The cabinetry design features a slate grey walnut finish and brass mesh on the door fronts which conceal a beverage fridge. Smoky antique mirrors fill the space above punctuated with a floating shelf for displaying glassware.
