Our busy San Francisco clients were in search of a Napa Valley retreat to escape on the weekends with their young daughters. They found their dream property overlooking the rolling hills and vineyards of California Wine Country and approached prefab builder Blu Homes with their vision of building a sustainable Napa vacation home with expansive outdoor spaces. Niche Interiors worked closely with Blu Homes to select finishes and fixtures and to customize this energy-efficient prefab home, with bespoke features such as the faux-bois plaster wall in the primary bedroom, floor to ceiling chalkboard cabinetry in the kitchen, and woodsy wallpaper in the girls bedroom. Textural rugs and fabrics and hand crafted wood pieces add warmth and layers to the space, allowing the contemporary artwork to take center stage.
The furnishings throughout the home blend mid-century shapes with low-profile modern pieces for a relaxed, informal vibe. Our clients are highly sensitive to chemicals and allergens, so special care was taken in specifying sustainable materials, finishes and furniture throughout the home. The interior design for the living room is centered around two custom eco-friendly, non-toxic sofas made of natural latex, organic wool, and FSC certified wood frames. A Moroccan inspired rug adds softness and organic pattern to the space, and an architectural console table sits below a photograph collected on an international trip.
A variety of local San Francisco Bay Area artisans left their touch on the home, including a custom 11 foot long rift oak dining table and coordinating benches to accommodate large groups of family and friends for our clients who love to host. Molded plywood pendant lights by local San Francisco designer Path Studios add a sculptural quality to the space. A commission from contemporary paper artist Yossi Ben Abu creates a graphic focal point at the end of the dining room, leading your eye into the bedroom wing of the home.
We initially loved the idea of adding shou sugi ban wood paneling in the primary bedroom but after some research our design team realized the off-gassing would be unhealthy indoors. Instead, we pivoted to plaster walls with a faux-bois pattern to mimic the look of wood. A custom, non-toxic tufted bed mixes with reclaimed wood nightstands, modern lighting and a wool rug. Our interior design team collaborated with Terra Ferma Landscapes on the outdoor spaces, creating custom cushions and pillows for the fire pit area and outfitting the pool cabana with contemporary furniture and sheer drapes to filter the sun on warm summer days.
