When you are planning a high-end interior renovation or custom build in the San Francisco Bay Area, location is everything. Each town and neighborhood brings distinct architectural styles and their own unique set of benefits and amenities. Drawing on two decades of high-end interior design experience working in every corner of the Peninsula, we curated our favorite premier locales with concise profiles for each location to help guide you in finding the perfect enclave. Niche Interiors specializes in creating luxury interiors that respect place, prioritize livability, and feel effortlessly refined. Our full-service approach is tailored for busy working professionals who value efficiency, transparency and creativity in equal measure.

Woodside
Best for: Privacy, Nature Lovers and Equestrians
Woodside is a wealthy, semi-rural town on the San Francisco Peninsula prized for acreage, redwood canopies and equestrian estates. Highlights include large lots and plenty of privacy, generous opportunities for indoor-outdoor living, and close access to elite schools and tech and venture capital headquarters in Silicon Valley. The prevailing architectural styles are estate vernaculars: modern farmhouses, shingle-style residences, Mediterranean villas mixed in with the occasional modern glass-and-wood pavilions.
The Woodside interior design project above is a collaboration between Niche Interiors and Andrew Mann Architecture – an extensive renovation of a 1920’s home reimagined for contemporary living, with a new layout that better supports daily life for a family with young children. The dark living and dining room was transformed with a new window wall that brings in ample natural light and provides a strong indoor-outdoor connection. We collaborated with the architect on space planning, finish and fixture selection from the beginning stages of the project through to custom furniture, built-in design and coordinating every last detail in the final installation.

Hillsborough
Best for: Young Families, Tech CEOs
Hillsborough is an exclusive residential enclave between San Mateo and Burlingame known for manicured grounds, stately homes and quiet streets. Its highlights are the large setbacks, privacy hedges and easy Peninsula access. Architectural styles lean toward Georgian, Colonial Revival, Tudor and updated traditional homes with formal room layouts and classic proportions. Interior strategies here favor preserving original moldings, fireplaces and millwork where possible, layering refined classical detailing with tailored upholstery and custom cabinetry, and integrating modern mechanical upgrades discreetly behind traditional façades. While you are more likely to see traditional, classic homes in Hillsborough, building contemporary custom homes is increasing in popularity.
The Niche Interiors team has worked on four high-end interior design projects in Hillsborough, most recently completing this 8,000 square foot home shown above. The architecture is warm contemporary, and the interior design scheme layers in luxury furniture, organic shapes, statement lighting and bold saturated color throughout. Having worked with these legacy clients on two other properties, it was a joy to translate their vision for this new primary residence.

Atherton
Best for: Multi-family Compounds, Ground-up Modern Homes
Atherton ranks among the most affluent towns in the United States, offering expansive parcels and a strong market for contemporary bespoke architecture. The town’s highlights include unparalleled privacy and frequent ground-up modern homes and ultra-luxury renovations. Architectural tendencies skew toward contemporary minimalism and clean-lined modern, with occasional Mediterranean or transitional estates. Tech elites are drawn to Atherton for its unmatched combination of privacy, space and proximity to Silicon Valley’s hubs. The town’s sprawling lots and tree-lined streets offer room for multi-generational estates and secure compound-style living—ideal for executives who value discretion. Excellent local schools, easy highway access to Menlo Park and Palo Alto, and a community of peers make it convenient for family life and networking. The home shown above is our third luxury interior design project in Atherton, with over 10,000 square feet of interior space sitting on an acre of manicured gardens. Our Atherton interior designers opted for a cool color palette that felt harmonious with the hard finishes and architectural details. Warm walnuts, sculptural pieces and luxury hand-knotted rugs mingle with mid-century modern inspired furniture. Click here to see more images of this modern, luxury Atherton interior design.
