Coastal Retreat

When our longtime San Francisco client purchased this mid-century Northern California beach house, it was outfitted with original dark wood paneling, stained glass windows, and small doors leading to the deck overlooking the beach. Our interior design team reimagined the space into a luxury California modern interior, integrating our client’s contemporary aesthetic while bringing in more natural light with a folding glass door system that opens to floor-to-ceiling views of the Pacific Ocean. We kept the finishes understated and cohesive, balancing precision and warmth for a casual, elevated vacation feel. Dark wood paneling and ceiling beams on the second floor were painted a crisp white, and the faded cork flooring was replaced with white oak flooring throughout the home. We clad the ceiling in the main living spaces in the same flooring material for a cohesive look that keeps the space light and airy. A brick fireplace was replaced with an architectural, floor-to-ceiling fireplace clad in board-formed concrete, and a reading nook was tucked beside it with a modern Italian daybed and handmade glass pendants by John Pomp Studios.

The interiors feature a mix of modern furniture and contemporary lighting alongside sculptural, vintage pieces that give a nod to the home’s mid-century California roots. Vintage Charlotte Perriand leather dining chairs are paired with a clean-lined oak table and a luxe statement chandelier in the dining area. Our interior design team specified a contemporary sectional in a moss green velvet, organic carved wood coffee table by Caste Design and a Finn Juhl Pelican armchair for the living room seating area. In the kitchen, an oversized island provides additional seating and prep space and outfitted with humble concrete countertops and backsplash and plywood cabinets. Minimal, hand-blown glass pendant lights by Alison Berger float above the island, providing ambient light without disrupting ocean views.

Floating stairs lead up to the upper level which features a media room and connecting bedrooms. The airy palette is punctuated with modern lighting and tonal artwork. A luminous silk shag rug grounds the primary bedroom, which features a custom bleached walnut and wool bed fabricated locally in San Francisco. Sculptural side tables in an ebony finish add contrast at the bedside while ribbed glass sconces by Allied Maker provide a subtle glow. A calming, ethereal painting by Udo Nöger appears to be illuminated from within.
