When our longtime clients asked us to design another home in their real estate portfolio we couldn’t wait to get started. The architectural design of this modern Hillsborough, California home emphasizes a horizontal, open plan with large spacious living areas. Our creative team curated the interior design to harmonize with the clean-lined architecture and restrained material palette, while introducing organic elements, luxe finishes and curated contemporary artwork to the home. The foyer establishes immediate architectural presence through a curated composition of statement furniture pieces, juxtaposed with slatted room dividers and an oak clad ceiling. A bespoke credenza is paired with an undulating bronze mirror, its free-form shape contrasting with the geometric millwork. The foyer’s centerpiece is a sculptural table anchored by a hand-carved area rug with organic edges.
The formal living room exemplifies luxury organic modernism through its balance of natural materials, sculptural forms, and refined restraint. The exposed timber beams and vertical wood screens frame the space with warm, tactile richness while maintaining a sightline from the living room to the dining room. At the room’s heart sits a curved peacock velvet sofa—a bold yet sophisticated anchor that introduces organic shape and saturated color. Our interior designers selected a hand-knotted rug with a sinuous pattern to add movement to the room, paired with luxury caste bronze cocktail tables. Contemporary artwork from local San Francisco art galleries flank the fireplace, bringing vibrant color and energy to the space.
A sculptural dining table sets the tone in the adjacent dining room; the undulating walnut base—with its fluid, wavelike form —serves as the room’s artistic centerpiece. Graceful curves are echoed in the hand crafted dining chairs upholstered in a mossy green wool. Above, a dramatic yet delicate branching glass chandelier creates a constellation of light, its asymmetrical composition adding visual movement.
Our interior designers came up with an intricate yet airy motif for the primary bedroom walls and ceilings. Artist Caroline Lizarraga created a delicate stippled pattern—reminiscent of topographical maps or shifting clouds—adding depth and movement without overwhelming the space’s tranquil atmosphere. Against this ethereal backdrop, custom furniture and luxury fabrics create a textural, layered feel. Modern nightstands with brass inlay are paired with a bespoke bed comprised of softly curved upholstered panels in a wool bouclé fabric. A spare bedroom was transformed into a closet, with custom millwork and an abstract gold leaf wallcovering.
The media room is anchored by a modern forest green sectional with a custom bookcase featuring soft curved edges and an asymmetric design, acting as a focal point and providing a convenient spot to place drinks behind the sofa. A luminous thread painting by Emil Lukas commands the left wall— bringing both color and contemplative depth to the room while a light sculpture by Danish artist Ane Lykke adds a statement to the corner of this high-end Hillsborough home.
