Luxury Interior Designer Atherton
While Atherton is one of the most exclusive zip codes in the country, luxury homes in this enclave are less about flash and more about exacting restraint—clean, architectural lines meet sumptuous materials and quiet, purposeful detailing. Generous volumes and seamless indoor‑outdoor connections take center stage, complemented by honed stone, warm woods and clean lines. Thoughtful lighting, integrated smart systems and bespoke millwork underscore craftsmanship, and muted sophisticated palettes let natural light and curated objects take center stage—resulting in homes that feel both modern and comfortable. Recently, the Niche Interiors team has completed work on two luxury homes in Atherton, both contemporary estates with incredible outdoor spaces. The home highlighted here is over 10,000 square feet sitting on over an acre of private gardens on one of the most esteemed streets in Atherton.

When our interior designers first stepped into this airy Atherton home the architecture immediately set the stage for the design — expansive windows, clean sight lines and a muted modern shell that begged for pieces with presence but not pretense. We anchored the living room with a sophisticated design scheme featuring a custom sofa: tailored proportions, a warm walnut frame, and luxe mohair upholstery. The furniture pieces needed to be simultaneously sculptural and understated— complementing the restrained material palette while also adding subtle color, texture and pattern.

A cast bronze cocktail table by French designer Christian Liaigre adds a grounded, refined presence and organic curves to the room. We layered a custom silk rug in tones of dove grey and silver to reference the stone fireplace. The luxe area rug grounds the seating zone — handwoven, low‑luster and patterned for subtle movement. Sculptural Jens Risom armchairs bring a mid‑century element to the mix: elegant, approachable, and perfectly scaled to the modern architecture. The result is a living room that reads effortless — a considered edit of craftsmanship, iconic design and the pared‑back architecture that lets each piece sing.

The formal dining room features a sleek angular table and contemporary dining chairs that strike a balance between form and comfort. Contemporary artwork and a statement light fixture add visual impact to the space. A custom walnut sideboard, designed by Niche Interiors and fabricated locally in San Francisco, anchors the dining room with quiet authority—its finely grained panels speak to meticulous joinery and the kind of atelier-level craftsmanship that elevates functional furniture to art. Paired with luxury seating and layered rugs, the sideboard’s warm, tactile walnut warms a deliberately muted, cool palette of white walls, stone-gray surfaces, and brushed metal accents; the result is a studied balance of warmth and restraint, where handcrafted materials and high-end finishes create an intimate, refined interior that feels both modern and timeless.

Tucked beneath tall, mullioned windows, the primary bedroom nook reads like a lived-in vignette—anchored by a custom settee upholstered in a soft, muted moss that picks up the greens from the trees outside. The low walnut base and cylindrical bolster give the piece a clean, architectural silhouette while keeping the seat feeling plush and inviting. Full‑height drapery in a subtle patterned neutral linen frames the view, softening light and providing privacy.
