Our clients envisioned a home that juxtaposed modernist themes with the original Victorian details of their historic San Francisco home. The homeowners embarked on a major renovation with William Duff Architects and called in Niche Interiors to help with interior design, furnishings and decorative lighting. The main living spaces boast vaulted ceilings and large sliding doors that open up to city views, while period details like Victorian trim and ceiling medallions enrich the entryway, linking to its historical facade. A modern staircase, framed in blackened steel and glass, creates a visual link across floors. The front door opens to herringbone wood floors and traditional paneling which provide a classical backdrop for the juxtaposition of a modern console table and contemporary light fixture in the foyer. A custom oversized paneled mirror references the more traditional architectural elements in the home.
The black and white color scheme is carried throughout the home and is most evident in the striking black and white kitchen which features flat panel cabinetry and white marble accents. Scandinavian inspired oak and leather barstools add warmth to the space and provide a welcome contrast to the black cabinetry. An oval Saarinen tulip table topped with Arabescato marble is paired with taupe leather dining chairs. In the modern living room a low- slung wool sectional faces incredible views of downtown San Francisco. The space is grounded by a tonal geometric rug that adds just the right amount of pattern. An Eames lounge chair sits in the corner, adding a classic mid-century design element to the space. In the primary bedroom a luxurious silk and wool rug adds softness and movement with an abstract motif. The Niche Interiors team designed a custom oak and mohair settee to provide an additional seating area opposite the bed.
