I was so pleased when Lesley from The Design File approached me about sharing my tips on selecting and displaying artwork for the home. Click here for the full article!
Excerpt from interview:
Q: Is it best to choose art that matches a room or build a room’s decor around art?
Niche Interiors: I think that the idea of matching a room’s decor to a piece of artwork is outdated.
Typically, I don’t design a room around a painting, it’s usually the other way around. I may decide that a large statement piece is needed to bring impact to a space, but I will wait until after the room is painted and all the furniture is installed before searching for the specific artwork to complete the room.
Q: Is there such a thing as too much art in a home? When do you know if you’ve gone overboard?
Niche Interiors: Yes, there is!
Remember that just because you have available wall space, it does not mean you need to fill it up.
This is a common mistake I see in homes. Edit your collections and give them room to breathe. Allowing for negative (empty) space around your artwork will draw more attention and importance to them.

You are right in not having to fill up every nook and surface with some decor item. Some spaces are meant to be, well, spaces.
That aside, my wife’s and my experience is that you never get that perfect art piece when you are intentionally shopping for it. It is best to take your time, and stumble upon your dream wall decor.

Very good advise. And today there are many talented artists at a stage in their careers willing to paint a custom piece sized and styled to compliment the beauty of a particular room, for the equivalent price of a factory print.
I should know, I’m one of them.
